BREAKING: Nigeria Reopens Borders with Niger Republic: President Tinubu’s Directive

In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to reopen Nigeria’s land and air borders with the Republic of Niger. This directive also includes the lifting of various sanctions imposed on Niger, as well as the Republic of Guinea.

The announcement was made through a statement signed by Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Tinubu. Titled ‘Nigeria opens land and air borders with Republic of Niger, lifts other sanctions,’ the statement outlines the immediate lifting of financial and economic restrictions against Niger.

President Tinubu’s directive aligns with recent decisions made by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. During an extraordinary summit held on February 24, 2024, in Abuja, ECOWAS leaders collectively decided to lift economic and travel sanctions imposed on Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.

Specifically, President Tinubu has instructed the immediate lifting of several sanctions imposed on the Republic of Niger, including:

– Closure of land and air borders between Nigeria and Niger Republic.
– ECOWAS no-fly zone on all commercial flights to and from Niger Republic.
– Suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between Nigeria and Niger.
– Freeze of all service transactions, including utility services and electricity, to the Niger Republic.
– Freeze of assets of the Republic of Niger in ECOWAS Central Banks and commercial banks.
– Suspension of Niger from all financial assistance and transactions with financial institutions, notably EBID and BOAD.
– Travel bans on government officials and their family members.

This directive marks a significant step towards normalizing relations between Nigeria and Niger Republic, as well as promoting regional cooperation and stability within the ECOWAS community. Further details are expected to follow.
