BREAKING: Court denies Nnamdi Kanu bail

The Federal High Court in Abuja delivered a ruling on Tuesday, denying the bail application submitted by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

However, the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, granted an accelerated hearing instead.

During the hearing, Alloy Ejimakor, counsel for the IPOB leader, pleaded with the court to grant Kanu bail prior to the trial’s commencement, citing his deteriorating health condition and the perceived threat to his life in the custody of the DSS.

Ejimakor argued that Kanu’s continued detention hindered his ability to mount a robust defence.

In response, the counsel for the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), urged the court to dismiss the bail application and prioritize an accelerated hearing.

Awomolo pointed out that the DSS possesses medical facilities capable of attending to Kanu’s health needs.

Furthermore, he accused Kanu of previously absconding while on bail, emphasizing that Kanu failed to provide assurance, under oath, that he wouldn’t flee if granted bail.

Kanu had previously been granted bail on health grounds in April 2017 after spending 18 months in detention. However, he fled the country following a military raid on his residence in September 2017.
