An envoy linked to Donald Trump has reportedly proposed that FIFA replace Iran national football team with Italy national football team at the 2026 World Cup.
According to the Financial Times, the suggestion is said to be part of efforts to mend relations between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which were reportedly strained following remarks about Pope Leo XIV in relation to the Iran conflict.
US special envoy Paolo Zampolli confirmed he raised the idea with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, arguing that Italy’s rich football history makes them a worthy replacement.
“I suggested that Italy take Iran’s place at the World Cup,” Zampolli said, noting the country’s four titles and pedigree in the tournament.
Italy, however, failed to qualify after losing on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a playoff final—marking the first time the four-time champions have missed three consecutive World Cups. Defender Leonardo Spinazzola described the outcome as deeply upsetting for players and fans alike.
Despite the proposal, Infantino has made it clear that Iran will participate in the tournament, emphasizing that the team earned qualification and represents its people. He also expressed hope that geopolitical tensions would ease before the competition begins.
Iran’s group-stage matches remain scheduled to be played in the United States, including fixtures at SoFi Stadium and in Seattle. Earlier suggestions from Iranian officials to move games to Mexico due to travel concerns have not been adopted.
While Trump previously stated that Iran would be “welcome” at the World Cup, he also questioned whether their participation would be appropriate given ongoing tensions. Nonetheless, Infantino reiterated that the United States remains open to hosting the Iranian team.
