Abducted Edo PDP chairman regains freedom

Tony Aziegbemi, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, has regained his freedom after being abducted.

Aziegbemi, who spent approximately 11 days in captivity, returned to his residence around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. The news of his release was announced by Senator Odion Ugbesia at 6:17 a.m.

It remains unconfirmed whether a ransom was paid for his release. Aziegbemi was kidnapped by gunmen close to his home on March 15, around 11 p.m. His abduction occurred as he was returning home from a meeting at the Government House, Benin City.

According to reports, the abductors demanded a ransom of N500 million for his release. However, Aziegbemi expressed relief to be reunited with his family and stated that he was not mistreated during his captivity.

In his words to PUNCH Online, he said, “I am happy to be back home. I thank you for calling and the concern. I am happy to reunite with my family. It comes with the terrain. I wasn’t maltreated by my kidnappers but again, I am happy to be back home.”
