Nigerians more religious than godly – Ishaq Oloyede

Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has commented on the religious landscape in Nigeria, highlighting a distinction between religiosity and godliness among Nigerians.

During a lecture titled “Duties of Muslim Citizens in National Development” delivered at the First Aare Sulaiman Afolabi Ogunlayi Ramadan Lecture in Ikole Ekiti, Ekiti State, Oloyede emphasized that while Nigerians exhibit strong religious beliefs, they often fall short in embodying true godliness. He criticized the prevalent tendency to rely solely on prayers without accompanying hard work, cautioning that this mindset hampers progress.

Oloyede urged Nigerians to tap into the country’s abundant resources, particularly its agricultural potential, as a means to uplift the nation’s fortunes. He lamented the nation’s overreliance on oil revenue, emphasizing the need to diversify and utilize other natural resources effectively.

Highlighting the positive impact of religion on socio-economic development, Oloyede stressed the importance of unity and the need to overcome ethnic divisions for national progress. He underscored the potential of religion to address societal challenges if utilized appropriately.

The event’s organizer, House of Representatives member Akin Rotimi, commended Ogunlayi for his contributions to religion and politics in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of honoring individuals like him while they are still alive.

In response, Ogunlayi expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting the rarity of being acknowledged during one’s lifetime. He appreciated the gesture as a celebration of his contributions to society.
