Army meets Plateau communities over insecurity

The special task force of the Nigerian Army, Operation Safe Haven, recently convened a crucial meeting with key stakeholders from Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau State to address the escalating insecurity in the region.

According to a statement released on Wednesday via the Nigerian Army’s official channels, the meeting aimed to tackle the resurgence of criminal attacks that have led to the loss of innocent lives in the affected areas.

Chaired by Major General AE Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation Safe Haven, the meeting took place at the headquarters of the 3 Division Nigerian Army on April 24, 2024.

Expressing his concern over the repeated breaches of security, Abubakar underscored the importance of addressing the underlying causes of conflict in the region to prevent further lawlessness.

During the meeting, stakeholders were urged to support government and security agencies’ resettlement efforts, facilitating the return of displaced persons to their homes.

Abubakar also revealed that some perpetrators of the recent attacks had been apprehended, with weapons and motorcycles recovered, while operations continued to apprehend the remaining culprits.

Representing Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang, Ephraim Usman, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, acknowledged the erosion of trust among the populace. He emphasized the government’s commitment to policing the state and ensuring the safety of its citizens.

Various stakeholders who spoke during the meeting highlighted the importance of genuine dialogue and forgiveness among conflicting parties to foster peace and enable the state to achieve economic prosperity.

The meeting brought together a diverse group of participants, including government officials, religious and traditional leaders, youth leaders, and socio-cultural groups.
