By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The Department of Road Transport Service, DRTS, on Thursday in an operation carried out by the DRTS Task Team, the Police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, in a cleanup exercise impounded motorcycles plying the Idu, Karimo axis of the city to curb criminal activities in some part of the FCT.

The Secretary, Command and Control, FCTA , Dr. Peter Olujimi, while speaking to journalists shortly after the exercise said that the operation was as a result of compliant and cry of FCT residents concerning the criminal activities perpetrated by motorcycle operators on innocent citizens.

Olujimi said, “Today’s exercise is a fall out of the cry of FCT residents, especially those who live around Idu, Karimo axis.”

” They have being complaining about the nefarious activities of these motorcyclists who are not even meant to operate in those places.”

“Also acts of criminalities are involved, many people have been attacked, especially in the nighttime.”

” This operation has been carried out is because of the complaints of the FCT residents. We now have feedbacks because residents use the FCT call center more often and the police hotlines to make their complaints, they are happy and supporting the FCT Administration.”

Olujimi stated that the operation is not just a day operation, but also carried out at nights in supporting the efforts of other security agencies within the FCT.

The Head of Operations, DRTS, Deborah Osho said that the operation was as a result of letters of complaints from residents in Idu and NASENI areas concerning the menace of motorcycle operators in these areas.

Osho said,” we can never be tired of doing our mandate of ridding the FCT of commercial motorcycles, that’s why we visited these areas for clean up.

She also explained that residents have continued to complain of criminal activities by motorcycle operators within these areas, who often snatch people’s phones and carry out all sorts of nefarious activities.
” As long as they continue to violate the rules we will continue to be picking them up.”

Osho disclosed that the impounded motorcycles will be crushed after an approval and date is given, “then we will swing into action.”

Okada operation has been banned from operating in the city, so if they are given a fine and allowed to go, they will definitely continue violating the ban, she emphasized.
