Farmers Urged to Prioritize Weather Forecasts to Mitigate Losses, Experts Advise

Experts in agriculture are advising local farmers to rely on weather forecasts before initiating farming activities to mitigate potential losses caused by climate change.

In interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, experts emphasized the importance of abandoning traditional farming practices in light of current climate challenges.

Mr. Omotunde Banjoko, an agriculture analyst, emphasized the necessity for farmers to consult the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) for weather information before commencing farming activities. He stressed the importance of aligning farming schedules with NiMet’s predictions to optimize productivity and minimize risks associated with unpredictable weather patterns.

Banjoko reiterated the significance of adhering to weather forecasts to avoid agricultural losses, acknowledging the undeniable impact of climate change on farming practices. He urged farmers to replace seeds that may not survive due to changing weather conditions, emphasizing the need to minimize additional costs by heeding available information.

Akin Alabi, an agriculture consultant and co-founder of Corporate Farmers International, highlighted the essential role of information and investment in irrigation in modern agricultural practices. He emphasized the need for farmers to invest in automated irrigation systems and alternative energy sources such as solar power to combat the effects of climate change and ensure consistent water supply for their farms.

Despite the delay in the farming season, Mr. Uche Ikenga, a crop farmer, expressed optimism regarding this year’s harvest. He encouraged fellow farmers to remain committed to their efforts despite the challenges posed by climate variability, emphasizing the importance of maximizing the remaining planting cycles to secure a successful harvest.
