From Abel Zwanke, Lafia

The family of the late Senator Solomon Ewuga Akwashiki has adopted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District bye-election, Mr. David Emmanuel Ombugadu, as one of its sons and appealed to the people of the zone to support his senatorial ambition ahead of the June 20 poll.

Ombugadu paid a courtesy visit to the country home of the late senator in Akwanga Local Government Area, where he was warmly received by members of the family, political associates, supporters and community leaders.

Speaking on behalf of the family on Monday, a representative expressed appreciation for Ombugadu’s visit and described his relationship with the late senator as cordial and longstanding.

“We have adopted Ombugadu as our son because of the respect and loyalty he showed to our father while he was alive. We are happy that he found it necessary to come and identify with the family,” the spokesman said.

The family, however, clarified that it had not endorsed any candidate for the forthcoming bye-election.

“We have not endorsed anybody. As a family, we are praying for all the candidates participating in the election. We believe the people of Nasarawa North will make their choice. Whoever emerges victorious will receive our support and prayers because the election is about the development of our people,” he added.

The spokesman further urged politicians and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the electioneering period and after the poll.

Addressing journalists shortly after the visit, Ombugadu thanked the family for the honour bestowed on him, describing the adoption as emotional and deeply significant.

“I am highly honoured by what happened today. The family has adopted me as a son, and I do not take that lightly. Let me make it clear that they did not endorse me as a candidate; they simply accepted me as one of their own because of the relationship I shared with the late Senator Akwashiki and his family,” he said.

The PDP candidate noted that the late senator played an important role in the political development of Nasarawa North and left behind a legacy of service, humility and commitment to the people.

“Senator Akwashiki was a father to many of us. His contributions to the growth of our communities and the advancement of democracy remain remarkable. Coming here today was not about politics alone; it was about honouring a man whose life touched many people across the district,” Ombugadu stated.

He pledged to continue consultations across the three local government areas that make up the senatorial district and promised quality representation if elected.

“I am encouraged by the support and goodwill I continue to receive from different stakeholders. My commitment remains to serve the people with sincerity, promote inclusive development and ensure that the voice of Nasarawa North is heard clearly at the National Assembly. I urge our supporters to remain peaceful and focused as we approach the election,” Ombugadu said.

Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of Korea (South Korea), Senator Prof. Nora Ladi Daduut, has called on Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, saying the success of ongoing reforms depends on collective patience, unity and commitment.

Daduut made the appeal on Wednesday during a thanksgiving mass held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Gold and Base, Jos, to celebrate her appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to South Korea.

The well-attended service attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, clergy, party members, family and supporters from across Plateau State and beyond.

Daduut described her appointment as both a privilege and a call to higher national service, expressing appreciation to President Tinubu for entrusting her with the diplomatic assignment.

She pledged to deploy her experience and expertise towards promoting Nigeria’s interests and strengthening diplomatic, economic and cultural relations between Nigeria and South Korea.

“I wish to express my profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for finding me worthy of this important national assignment.

“I accept this responsibility with humility and a firm commitment to advancing Nigeria’s interests and strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and South Korea,” she said.

Daduut noted that South Korea remains a global leader in technology, innovation, industrialisation and education, adding that Nigeria stands to benefit significantly from stronger cooperation with the Asian nation.

She said her appointment offers another opportunity to contribute to the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration and support efforts aimed at repositioning the country for sustainable growth and development.

The ambassador-designate also commended First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her commitment to women empowerment, social inclusion and national development.

She expressed gratitude to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), traditional rulers, religious leaders, women and youth groups, as well as the people of Plateau State, for their support throughout her political and public service career.

Daduut urged Nigerians not to lose hope in the country despite current economic and social challenges, stressing that nation-building requires unity, resilience and collective sacrifice.

She particularly encouraged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and to continue pursuing excellence, hard work and integrity, describing Nigeria as a country of vast opportunities.

Daduut, who represented Plateau South in the 9th National Assembly, also called on women to continue breaking barriers and taking up leadership roles in politics, governance and other sectors.

She further urged citizens to promote peace, tolerance and mutual understanding, noting that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of stability.

In his homily, the Parish Priest of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Joseph Agbazi, praised Daduut for her commitment to the church, public service and humanity.

He described her as a worthy ambassador of Plateau State and Nigeria, noting that she had overcome significant challenges in her public life journey.

Agbazi expressed confidence in her ability to excel in her new diplomatic assignment and urged her to uphold the virtues of integrity, humility and selfless service.

Kumuyi Rules Out Family Succession for Deeper Life Leadership

By Abigail David

The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, has dismissed speculations that he plans to hand over the leadership of the church to any of his biological children, insisting that the ministry belongs to Jesus Christ.

Speaking during a church service, Kumuyi addressed rumours that he could eventually pass the leadership of the church to one of his sons after his tenure.

He said some people had questioned whether he would choose one of his children as his successor but stressed that the church is not a personal or family inheritance.

“It’s not his church. Jesus said, ‘Upon this rock, I will build my church.’ It is the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, and nobody has the right to hand it over to his son,” he said.

The cleric maintained that the leadership of the ministry should be determined by divine direction rather than family ties.

Kumuyi also cited biblical examples, noting that key Christian figures, including Peter, Paul and John, did not transfer the leadership of the church to their children.

His remarks come amid growing public speculation over succession plans within the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, one of Nigeria’s largest Pentecostal churches.

Power Minister Tegbe Assumes Office, Seeks Stronger Collaboration to Reform Electricity Sector

By Jabiru Hassan

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has pledged to strengthen collaboration, improve governance, and enhance accountability across the country’s electricity sector as he officially assumed office in Abuja.

Speaking during his inaugural meeting with chief executive officers and heads of agencies under the Federal Ministry of Power, Tegbe said achieving the Federal Government’s objectives for the power sector would require a coordinated effort among all stakeholders. He identified key priorities of the administration as increasing power generation capacity, expanding transmission infrastructure, improving sector liquidity, and accelerating investment in renewable energy.

While acknowledging progress made in recent years, the minister said more work was needed to meet the sector’s targets. “This sector faces serious challenges. Technical issues account for only a fraction of those challenges. The larger challenge is governance. No agency, department, or unit can solve these problems alone,” Tegbe said.He called for stronger cooperation among institutions, urging stakeholders to work as “one team with one mandate” through improved communication and coordinated action.

Tegbe also highlighted the importance of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in maintaining grid stability and commended the agency for restoring power supply following a recent feeder outage within a 12-hour period. The minister further disclosed plans to introduce a performance-based incentive framework to reward productivity, innovation, and excellence across the sector.

The meeting was attended by leaders of key power sector agencies, including TCN, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), FGN Power Company, and Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET).
