Eight Opposition Parties Gather in Kaduna to Strategize for 2027 Elections

By Milcah Tanimu

Kaduna, May 16, 2024 — In preparation for the 2027 general election, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) organized a summit in Kaduna, bringing together eight opposition parties to bolster their structures and strategies. The event, named the ADC Democracy Summit Kaduna 2024, focused on strengthening party foundations to effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and address the nation’s pressing issues.

Prominent political groups, including the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), People’s Redemption Party (PRP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), KOWA, Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), and the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), participated in the summit. The gathering emphasized mobilizing grassroots support and raising political awareness among citizens.

Lawal Nalado, the summit’s chairman, underscored the importance of addressing the hardships faced by Nigerians and promoting informed decision-making ahead of the elections. He dismissed rumors of a merger and criticized the current administration for exacerbating national challenges rather than alleviating them.

Supporting Nalado’s remarks, PRP National Chairman Falalu Bello highlighted the need for effective voter mobilization and the selection of credible candidates. He pointed out major challenges faced by opposition groups, such as resource constraints, lack of internal democracy, and interference from the ruling party.

Ahmed Tujjani, chairman of ADC and IPAC Kaduna State, explained that the summit aimed to tackle socioeconomic and political challenges by offering pragmatic solutions. He stressed the importance of early engagement and citizen involvement in the electoral process, clarifying that the summit was focused on promoting dialogue and collaboration among opposition parties rather than forming mergers or coalitions.
