Delta Community Rises Against Criminal Activities, Introduces Security Vests for Keke Operators

By Sam Akanimo

A community in the Warri axis of Delta State has started to take measures aimed at enhancing security, and to curb criminal activities in the area.

Chairman of Ugbuwangue community in the area, Blacky Yonwuwen, has provided customised vests for tricycle riders operating in the community.

The vests, which bear unique numbers and the community’s logo, are designed to facilitate easy identification of authorized tricycle riders.

During the presentation of the vests, Yonwuwen emphasized the importance of wearing the vests while on duty, stating that any rider without the vest will be regarded as an intruder and will face punishment.

This initiative is a response to the high rate of criminal activities, including phone theft and rape, allegedly committed by some tricycle riders.

According to Yonwuwen, the identification vests are necessary because the community has experienced difficulties in identifying and apprehending criminal riders, who they often claim to be from neighboring communities such as Ubeji and Ekurede.

With the new identification system, riders can be easily identified and and held accountable for their actions.

The fifty customised vests with numbers tags are expected to enhance security and promote accountability among tricycle riders in Ugbuwangue community.

He added that more vests would be provided, and that the community was working with the tricycle riders’ union to ensure that all riders are registered and issued the CC identification vests to further strengthen security in the community.
