The Ogun State Police Command revealed on Monday that a pregnant woman, Rahemat Lateef, who had claimed she was abducted by unknown gunmen while on her way to the state hospital in Ijaiye, Abeokuta for childbirth, had fabricated the story.
SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, disclosed this on her X handle.
Odutola explained that Lateef, upon realizing she had suffered another miscarriage, decided to fake her own abduction to avoid her husband’s disappointment, who was expecting her to deliver their baby.
Lateef reportedly fled to Kwara State and later returned to Abeokuta with her father.
Sources indicate that the housewife, frustrated by repeated miscarriages, concocted the kidnap story as a way out of her predicament.
Odutola provided updates on the incident, stating, “Rahemat Lateef, who was reported abducted by her husband, was never abducted. She planned her trip to Kwara State to escape her husband’s anger due to her unfortunate miscarriages.”
“She fabricated the story. She traveled to Kwara State on her own, far from any kidnap scenario. She had a miscarriage, felt frustrated due to the repeated occurrences, and feared her husband’s reaction, so she orchestrated the script. The anti-kidnapping team tracked her until she resurfaced.”
“She is currently receiving medical attention and is safe,” Odutola added.
Rahemat’s husband, Ogunbunmi Lateef, had claimed last Thursday that he received a WhatsApp message notifying him of his wife’s abduction by some armed men.
Odutola, confirming the report on her X handle, had previously stated, “One Ogunbunmi Lateef of Oke Lantoro reported that his pregnant wife, due for delivery, left home for the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta. He received a WhatsApp message confirming her abduction by unknown armed men.”
