Mastering the art of wearing a suit in 2024 involves combining timeless elegance with contemporary trends. Here’s how men can style their suits to make a statement this year.
The suit, a cornerstone of men’s fashion, has evolved significantly over time. Originating from the French word “suivre,” meaning “to follow,” it initially referred to outfits coordinated in color and material. The modern suit’s development is often credited to Beau Brummell, a 19th-century English gentleman who shifted away from the ornate French court attire to a simpler, more refined look with long trousers and understated coats.
Modern Suit Fit
The modern suit fit, also known as a tailored fit, strikes a balance between the traditional looser style and the ultra-slim “skinny” fit. This style is reminiscent of the 1950s stockbroker or banker. Key features include higher armholes, a fitted chest, lower-waisted trousers, and a jacket that is slightly cinched at the waist. Tapered trousers that aren’t too tight around the thighs and calves, along with thinner ankles, create a clean silhouette.
Proper Proportions
Achieving the right proportions is essential for a well-fitted suit. The jacket should end where your buttocks meet your legs, and the sleeves should reach your wrists, allowing a half-inch of your shirt cuff to show. While higher armholes can enhance the fit, they shouldn’t be uncomfortable or restrictive.
Ideal Trouser Length
The perfect trouser length features a soft crease at the front where the fabric meets the shoe. This crease should be subtle and not too baggy. The pants should reach somewhere between the middle and top of the back of your shoe to avoid dragging and maintain a sharp, clean line.
Ditch the Tie (Maybe)
While ties have traditionally been a staple of suit attire, they are no longer mandatory. You can opt for a tieless look with a dress shirt, polo shirt, round-neck or v-neck knit shirt, or even a silk shirt to add a touch of personality.
Embracing these modern suit styling tips will help men turn heads and make a lasting impression in 2024.
