Curfew Enforces Calm in Kaduna After Looting Escalates During #EndBadGovernance Protest

By Milcah Tanimu

Kaduna remains eerily quiet today as a 24-hour curfew takes effect in response to escalating violence during the #EndBadGovernance protest. The curfew was implemented after hoodlums, posing as protesters, seized the chaos to loot government and private properties.

The streets, including key areas like Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Central Market, are largely deserted. Shops, filling stations, and markets have all been shut down as a precautionary measure.

Samuel Aruwan, the Overseeing Commissioner for the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, confirmed that the curfew was a necessary step for maintaining peace. He stated that the Kaduna State Security Council, following a meeting with Governor Senator Uba Sani, decided to impose the curfew due to evidence of criminal elements hijacking the protests for looting and vandalism.

“The ongoing protest has been overtaken by individuals engaging in criminal activities, leading to the destruction of property,” Aruwan said. “In light of this situation, the Kaduna State Security Council has resolved to enforce a 24-hour curfew across Kaduna and Zaria Metropolises, effective immediately.”

Residents are urged to stay indoors while security forces manage the situation. The curfew will be reviewed based on ongoing monitoring and assessments.

The protest has also seen unusual symbols of dissent, with some demonstrators carrying Russian flags as a statement against the prevailing economic hardships and hunger in the country.
