The Best Time to Exercise for Lowering Blood Sugar

Must read

When it comes to managing blood sugar levels, the timing of your daily exercise can be just as crucial as the workout itself.

While it’s well-known that regular exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle, what many people may not realize is that the specific time of day you choose to exercise can significantly impact the benefits you receive, particularly in controlling blood sugar levels.

A recent study from the University of Granada in Spain highlights this point. Researchers found that exercising in the evening can lead to substantial reductions in blood glucose levels.

The study involved 186 overweight or obese adults with an average BMI of 32.9 and an average age of 47. Over two weeks, participants’ movements were tracked using accelerometers, and their blood glucose levels were monitored continuously.

The findings revealed that those who exercised at least 50% of the time in the evening, specifically between 6 p.m. and midnight, experienced significant and sustained reductions in blood glucose levels throughout the day. This effect was much more pronounced than in those who led a sedentary lifestyle.

This information is especially relevant for individuals with obesity who are at risk of or are managing diabetes. Exercising in the evening may provide them with more effective blood sugar control.

Beyond blood sugar management, the timing of exercise also plays a role in other health benefits. For example, exercising two hours before bedtime can enhance sleep quality, while morning workouts have been shown to help women reduce belly fat and lower blood pressure.

Ultimately, it’s not just about incorporating exercise into your routine, but about doing it at the right time to maximize the benefits and achieve your health goals.
