No Justification for Buying 14-Year-Old Plane” – Ex-Minister Oby Ezekwesili Criticizes Tinubu

By Milcah Tanimu

Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education and Solid Minerals, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent purchase of a 14-year-old Airbus plane for $150 million, deeming it unjustifiable. Ezekwesili’s remarks come amidst widespread criticism from Nigerians who question the decision, especially given the country’s current economic turmoil.

The purchase of the used aircraft, which occurred without parliamentary approval, has been a point of contention, with many accusing the president of extravagance during a time of economic crisis exacerbated by his policies.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga’s attempts to defend the acquisition have been met with significant backlash, as social media users condemn the perceived extravagance. Ezekwesili, who is also the founder of The School of Politics, Policy, and Governance, expressed her disapproval on X, stating that no argument can rationalize such expenditure.

Ezekwesili remarked, “No argument justifies the purchase of a 14-year-old Airbus plane by President Bola Tinubu for his indulgence. This latest profligacy cannot be persuaded by reasonable people.”

She further criticized the current administration’s priorities, suggesting that such indulgence occurs at the expense of the impoverished citizens. She expressed frustration over what she sees as a disregard for the country’s dire economic conditions, stating, “I hope it is now evident to all eyes why they needed to ‘grab it… snatch it… and run away with it.’”

Ezekwesili’s comments reflect a broader public sentiment questioning the appropriateness of the luxury purchase amidst widespread economic challenges.
