Nigerian Army Orders Investigation into Killing of Villagers in Kaduna

By   Milcah   Tanimu

On August 23, 2024, the Nigerian Army announced an immediate investigation into the deaths of villagers in Sabon Birni, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, reportedly caused by soldiers. The Army expressed deep concern over the allegations and extended condolences to the victims’ families.

Eyewitnesses claimed that soldiers opened fire at a local cattle market on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of at least three people and over 100 cows. The Army’s response came after significant backlash from the local community and broader public.

Major-General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Army’s spokesperson, stated that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. He emphasized that the military is committed to protecting lives and property as mandated by the Nigerian Constitution and would not tolerate any breach of this duty.

“We wish to sympathize with the Sabon Birni community and the families of those affected. We assure that any personnel found responsible will face appropriate sanctions,” Nwachukwu said. He urged residents to remain calm and promised that the findings of the investigation would be made public.

The investigation aims to determine the causes of the incident and identify those responsible, with a commitment to transparency and accountability.
