Kaduna Residents Struggle with Transportation Fare Surge Amid Fuel Price Hike

By  Milcah  Tanimu

Following a significant increase in petrol prices, transportation fares within Kaduna have surged, causing widespread frustration among residents. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has raised the price of petrol from ₦617 to ₦897 per litre, effective September 3, 2024.

A recent survey by NAN revealed that transportation costs have doubled in Kaduna. For instance, a ride on a commercial tricycle (Keke) from the central market to Sabo now costs ₦500, up from ₦300. Similarly, trips from the central market to Barnawa and Nararyi settlements have risen to ₦400 from ₦250.

Other notable fare increases include:
– Gonin Gora to Kasuwa: ₦500 (previously ₦300)
– Kakuri to Kasuwa: ₦400 (previously ₦300)
– Kasuwa to Kawo: ₦300 (previously ₦200)

Residents have also reported that commercial motorcycle operators are charging double for short distances within neighborhoods. Malam Abubakar Sa’idu, a commercial tricycle operator, noted that fares might rise further as the supply of fuel remains inconsistent. He mentioned that obtaining fuel at NNPC stations is time-consuming, leading many to purchase from black market sellers at ₦1,400 per litre.

Mr. Dajuma Musa, a commercial motorcycle operator, acknowledged the necessity of fare increases to cover the high cost of fuel. He now prefers to stay at key junctions rather than roam for passengers, reflecting a significant drop in commuter numbers.

Mrs. Abigail Adams, a Barnawa resident, expressed concern over how the increased transportation costs impact her daily budget. “With my modest salary, I now spend at least ₦1,200 daily on transportation. It’s unsustainable,” she said, urging the government to revert fuel prices and expedite the implementation of the new national minimum wage.

Mr. Haruna Dauda from Ungwan Romi highlighted the looming challenge for parents as schools resume. “This situation is dire and could worsen with school fees and other expenses,” he said, stressing the financial strain on families with multiple school-aged children.

The steep rise in transport fares has amplified the daily struggles of Kaduna residents, underscoring the urgent need for governmental intervention to alleviate the financial burden caused by the fuel price hike.
