Federal Government Urged to Resolve Basketball Crisis

Igoche Mark, a prominent basketball promoter, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to urgently address the ongoing crisis in Nigerian basketball, which has impeded the sport’s development.

Speaking to journalists at the conclusion of a two-day basketball camp organized by the Veterans of Abuja (VOA) for children aged 4-16, Mark stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of the crisis rather than merely treating its symptoms.

“The problem with basketball has been lingering, and it remains unresolved,” Mark said. “I urge the Sports Minister, Senator John Owan Enoh, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to address the fundamental issues, rather than resorting to the cosmetic solutions of previous administrations.”

Mark emphasized the role of sports in tackling broader national issues such as insecurity and economic challenges. “Sports can address issues like insecurity, economic difficulties, and unemployment,” he said. “I urge the Federal Government to pay greater attention to sports and resolve the basketball crisis, as this will yield positive results.”

The Mark D’ Ball Basketball Championship, established by Mark, is one of the premier basketball tournaments in recent years, and he has consistently supported the sport. Mark expressed confidence that with effective leadership in the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), the sport could thrive.

“The potential for basketball in Nigeria is immense, and with the right leadership, we can achieve remarkable success,” Mark said. “I believe the government and key stakeholders can collaborate to resolve the crisis and elevate basketball to new heights.”

Mark’s appeal comes at a crucial time for Nigerian basketball, which has been beset by internal conflicts and mismanagement. The government’s response to this crisis will be closely scrutinized by sports sector stakeholders.
