Fuel Hike, Security Concerns Behind Postponement of School Resumption – Edo State Government

The Edo State Government has explained that the recent postponement of the resumption date for public and private schools across the state was a precautionary measure aimed at protecting children from the adverse effects of the current hike in fuel prices.

The government had initially announced on Saturday that schools would not resume on Monday, September 9, 2024, as previously scheduled, due to the ongoing challenges caused by the recent fuel price surge and the difficulties faced by parents and guardians. This decision, however, was met with criticism, with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) describing it as politically motivated.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, said the postponement was driven by the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of children amidst the economic and security concerns. He urged the public to remain vigilant and work together to maintain peace and stability.

The statement read in part:
“This decision is rooted in our deep commitment to protecting our children from all forms of danger, including the possible consequences of the sharp increase in fuel prices and the subsequent rise in the cost of living.”

Nehikhare also pointed to intelligence reports indicating potential security threats from thugs allegedly imported by the APC to cause unrest. He stressed that the safety of children is the government’s top priority, and the decision to keep them at home is a precautionary measure until the situation stabilizes.

“The reckless actions of the APC, including violent incidents that have endangered innocent individuals, are alarming. These actions seem aimed at provoking a state of emergency while shifting blame onto the ruling party. We also want to assure the public that mechanisms are in place to address any learning gaps caused by this delay in resumption.”

He further emphasized that the government remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and education of the children and will take necessary steps to protect communities and ensure that schools remain safe environments for learning.
