Delta State Ready for 8th National Youth Games, Says SSG

By Anne Azuka

As the 8th National Youth Games approaches, set to open on September 12, Delta State is fully prepared to host a seamless event in its capital, Asaba. The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, assured this readiness following an inspection of the event’s facilities.

Dr. Emu inspected various locations, including the Stephen Keshi International Stadium, the Cenotaph (now a sports center), the ultra-modern hockey pitch, and the hostel facilities at Dennis Osadebey University. He confirmed that the competition venues, accommodation, and transportation arrangements are satisfactory, and emphasized the high level of security and safety measures in place for participants.

The inspection covered the main bowl, indoor sports halls, swimming pool, and VIP lounges. At Dennis Osadebey University, Dr. Emu reviewed the beddings, toilet facilities, electricity, and water supply, and even sampled the food provided for athletes.

“We are ready,” Dr. Emu declared. “We have top-notch facilities and maintenance. We could start the competition today if needed. The Local Organizing Committee has done an excellent job, and I am confident we will make His Excellency proud.”

On security, Dr. Emu noted that while Delta State is relatively safe, extra precautions are being taken. The police are involved with the LOC, and advanced technological security measures are in place. He expressed confidence in managing any potential challenges and promised that athletes, officials, and spectators would have a positive experience.

“Asaba has transformed into a hospitable city,” Dr. Emu added. “We have hosted numerous international events, and the Youth Games will be well managed. The facilities are secure, and the accommodation at Dennis Osadebey University is excellent. We are committed to ensuring that everyone has a great time.”

Dr. Emu was joined on the inspection by Chief Solomon Ogba, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Festus Owhojero, Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission, and other key members of the LOC.
