By Abel Leonard

The Nasarawa House of Assembly is currently working on a bill to rename the state polytechnic after the late Emir of Lafia, Alhaji Isa Agwai II.

The Speaker, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdulahi, said at a public hearing in Lafia that the bill was not intended to change the law establishing the polytechnic.

However, the chairman on House Committee on Education,Mr Daniel Ogazi who represented the speaker, said that the public hearing was to gather public input on the matter.

“The essence of this public hearing is not to change the law establishing the polytechnic; it is to gather inputs from stakeholders on the bill to rename the state polytechnic.

“We are here to get public inputs on the proposed executive bill seeking to immortalise the late Emir of Lafia, Alhaji Isa Agwai.

“The reason to rename the institution after the late Emir is because of his positive contributions to peace and education development in the state,” he said.

The speaker said that law-making was the constitutional responsibility of the Assembly, adding “our role is to make laws for the good of the people of the state.”

He urged the people of the state to be confident in the ability of the Assembly to make laws that would serve their interests.

Daybreak news reports that the public hearing was attended by traditional rulers, opinion leaders, clergymen and students, among others.
