Hayok Medicare, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) on Thursday rendered free medical services to some residents of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to mark World Diabetes Day.

Dr Dr Oluyombo Peter, the Director of the NGO, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the gesture was to create awareness on non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension.

The UN passed a resolution to designate Nov. 14 as World Diabetes Day on Dec. 20, 2006 to raise awareness on diabetes, its prevention and complications and the care that people with the condition need.

Beneficiaries of the free medical services at Jabi Central Motor Park in Abuja were mostly drivers, passengers and artisans.

Peter said 70 per cent of global death was as a result of non-communicable diseases, hence the need to pay attention to them.

He said the free healthcare services at the park took place concurrently at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

He explained that virtually in every household, there would be either diabetes patient or hypertension sometimes unknowingly to those suffering from the diseases.

He identified quality diets as one of the major ways to prevent the ailments, disclosing that screening high blood pressure, blood sugar level, temperature and weight with a view to offer treatment were necessary.

One of the beneficiaries who gave his name as David Apata thanked the organisation for the gesture.

Apata said he didn’t go for any medical check up for more than five years.

Another beneficiary, Ado Bello, told NAN that because of his busy job, he only went for medical check up once in a year. (NAN)
