A devastating flood has struck the popular Kigo New Extension in Kaduna North Local Government Area, leaving residents homeless and properties at significant risk. This annual phenomenon not only displaces families but also introduces dangerous animals and microorganisms, threatening human life and raising concerns about potential outbreaks of cholera and other related diseases.

Mr. Bankole Sunday, a resident of Kigo Extension, reported, “The flood occurred on Friday, September 21, 2024, and has overtaken the last and second-to-last streets in the area.” He appealed to the Kaduna State Government for assistance, stating, “Our minds are unsettled, and we are suffering greatly due to this flood menace.”

Another resident, Mr. Haruna Samaila, added, “The flood began two days ago, and we hoped it would subside, but as of last night (Monday), it worsened. Our compounds and roads are flooded with dirty water filled with dangerous animals and microorganisms. Please convey our message to the government.”

The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) has warned residents of seven local government areas, including those in flood-prone communities along waterways, to relocate immediately to safer areas, including Kigo Extension.

Similar flooding incidents have been reported across Nigeria, particularly in Adamawa and Borno states. In Adamawa, a breach of the Kiri Dam caused severe flooding, affecting 12,583 individuals and destroying 298 buildings.

The floods have damaged critical infrastructure, disrupting access to hospitals, schools, and markets. The situation is dire, and residents urgently need assistance.

Affected areas in Kaduna include Kigo Extension, Kabala Costain, Ungwan Rimi, Tudun Wada, Nassarawa, and other regions along waterlines. Residents from these areas are calling on the Kaduna State Government to address the flood crisis and prevent the outbreak of cholera and related diseases.

Given the circumstances, residents urge the government to reintroduce monthly environmental sanitation initiatives and conduct house-to-house inspections to maintain cleanliness and reduce disease risk.

They are also calling for immediate action to provide relief for affected residents. Kaduna State has a history of flooding, with 2022 floods impacting 57 locations in 14 local government areas. Proactive measures are necessary to prevent such disasters.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other humanitarian organizations are urged to support the affected residents. The Kaduna State Government should consider improving drainage systems and relocating residents from flood-prone areas.

Meanwhile, residents are advised to take precautions to safeguard themselves and their properties. Immediate action is crucial to mitigate the flood’s effects.

“The Kaduna State Government must prioritize the safety and well-being of its residents. The flood has caused immense hardship in Kigo Extension and other affected areas. A prompt government response is essential to alleviate the suffering of those affected. The people of Kaduna State deserve better, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure their safety and well-being,” said affected residents.
