Reps to hold security summit

The House of Representatives plans to hold a security summit to address the increasing attacks by gunmen across Nigeria, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Abbas urged lawmakers to intensify efforts in delivering the dividends of democracy, while also praising security forces for their recent successes against terrorists. He stated, “The House will organize a high-level legislative security summit in the last quarter of the year, aimed at tackling Nigeria’s pressing security issues.”

The summit will bring together key stakeholders, including representatives from the executive branch, security agencies, policy experts, and civil society organizations. The focus will be on legislative reforms to bolster the capacity of security institutions, improve inter-agency collaboration, and enhance intelligence use in combating insurgency, banditry, and other security threats.

It will also explore strategies for community policing, border security, and integrating advanced technology into national defense. Abbas commended the military for neutralizing over 150 terrorists and key bandit leaders, adding that the government’s commitment to restoring peace is evident through increased collaboration with neighboring countries and improved intelligence sharing.

He called for a stronger partnership with the executive arm to deliver on the promises of democracy. “While maintaining our independence as a legislative body, we will work harmoniously with the executive for the benefit of Nigeria, ensuring economic stability, enhanced security, and national development,” Abbas said.

He also highlighted the House’s achievements before its recess in July, noting the introduction of 1,351 bills, 89 of which were passed, impacting sectors like electricity, healthcare, and financial accountability. Looking ahead, he stressed the need to prioritize economic reforms, youth empowerment, healthcare, infrastructure, and education.

Abbas acknowledged Nigeria’s economic challenges and affirmed the House’s commitment to passing laws that promote recovery, attract investments, and provide targeted social welfare. He praised President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council for approving economic stabilization bills, which provide tax relief for businesses, workers, and small businesses, aiming to drive job creation and economic growth.
