Kebbi State Appeals for Federal Assistance as Floods Displace Thousands

The Kebbi State Government has called on the Federal Government for urgent assistance following severe floods that have displaced thousands and caused widespread destruction across the state.

Speaking at a press conference in Birnin Kebbi on Friday, the State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed-BK, highlighted the scale of the disaster, which has claimed lives and damaged property.

He reported that the floods resulted in the death of several individuals and submerged 858,311 farmlands, while 329,092 households have been left homeless.

Ahmed-BK stated, “A total of 329,092 households were displaced by floods in the state, 858,311 farmlands submerged, and sadly, lives were lost. In Birnin Kebbi local government, two people lost their lives; in Ngaski LG, seven; in Maiyama LG, eight; in Kalgo LG, five; and in Jega LG, seven people tragically died due to this year’s floods.”

Given the extensive impact, the commissioner emphasized the state’s inability to cope alone and appealed for federal intervention to provide relief to the affected communities.

“Considering the high impact of the floods in Kebbi State, we cannot manage this crisis alone, which is why we are requesting the Federal Government to swiftly provide aid to bring relief to the victims,” he added.

Ahmed-BK noted that the state has already submitted a detailed report to Abuja for review and further action. He also expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s commitment to assist states affected by floods nationwide.
