Atiku Abubakar’s camp has responded to the association of some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. This relationship has raised concerns among party members, particularly since Atiku was the PDP presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 general elections.
Demola Olarewaju, Special Assistant on Digital Media and Strategy to Atiku, criticized these governors. He stated that their association with Wike signifies a betrayal of the PDP. In a post on his X handle, Olarewaju remarked, “Wike’s entire relevance in Nigeria’s political space is directly dependent on his ability to rock PDP’s boat and make it less formidable.”
He added, “Any governor associating with him is a traitor in PDP. The governors are the root of PDP crises since 2015.” Olarewaju highlighted that the party’s challenges stem from the “zoning” of National Working Committee (NWC) offices to individual governors after losing Aso Rock in 2015.
Tensions within the PDP are evident, particularly concerning the leadership structure in Rivers State, where Siminalayi Fubara serves as governor. Reports indicate that some PDP governors support Wike, while others stand behind Fubara.
