World Bank Approves $1.57B for Nigeria’s Health Sector

By   Milcah   Tanimu

The World Bank has approved three new financing initiatives totaling $1.57 billion to bolster Nigeria’s health sector. This decision, announced by the bank’s Country Office in Abuja, aims to enhance human capital development through improved health services for women, children, and adolescents.

The funding breakdown includes $500 million to address governance challenges in education and health (HOPE-GOV), $570 million for the Primary Healthcare Provision Strengthening Program (HOPE-PHC), and $500 million for the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria Project (SPIN).

These programs are designed to improve service delivery in education and primary healthcare, which are vital for enhancing Nigeria’s human capital outcomes. The SPIN project will also focus on dam safety and water resource management to mitigate the effects of climate change, particularly floods and droughts.

Ndiamé Diop, the World Bank country director for Nigeria, emphasized that this financing will address the challenges faced by Nigerians, especially women and girls, in accessing quality health services. The bank is committed to collaborating with the federal government and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives.
