Hon. Dalyop Chollom, the Member representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency of Plateau State on the Labour Party (LP) platform, has confirmed that the Labour Party is contesting for all positions in the upcoming local government elections in the state.
Speaking to reporters in Jos, the state capital, Chollom emphasized that none of the party’s candidates have withdrawn from the race, refuting rumors suggesting otherwise. “It is very appalling to hear such unfounded information being disseminated to the general public, which is hereby vehemently refuted,” he stated.
The federal lawmaker also condemned the vandalization of Labour Party billboards, banners, and other campaign materials throughout the state, describing the act as undemocratic and unacceptable. “This development is uncivil and hereby condemnable,” he added.
Chollom urged the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) to adhere strictly to its mandate of conducting free, fair, and transparent elections that are acceptable to all parties involved.
In response, PLASIEC Chairman Plangji Chishak, addressing a stakeholders’ meeting, affirmed the commission’s commitment to creating stable democratic institutions at the grassroots level, aligning with Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s vision. He acknowledged the historical context that has shaped citizens’ perceptions of State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) in Nigeria, noting that past irregularities have led to a loss of confidence. Chishak assured stakeholders that the commission is prepared to rewrite this narrative.
