Must read

Rivers Hoopers emerged victorious in a thrilling display of skill and determination at the inaugural Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Independence Day Basketball Championship held in Abuja. Defying the odds, the reigning champions of the Nigeria Premier Basketball League defeated Gboko City Chiefs with a final score of 72-59.

The game was an emotional rollercoaster, with the Hoopers taking an early lead in the first quarter and maintaining their advantage throughout the match. Abel Offia, named the Most Valuable Player, delivered a standout performance, scoring 20 points and displaying accuracy from both the three-point and free-throw lines.

Reflecting on the victory, Hoopers’ head coach Ogoh Odaudu attributed their success to the team’s unity and determination. “Despite facing challenges and rustiness since our return from the BAL, the team’s unity, cohesion, and resilience propelled us to victory,” Coach Odaudu stated.

On the other side, City Chiefs’ coach Alex Ujoh acknowledged the shortcomings that led to their defeat, citing turnovers and selfish play. “We weren’t handling our turnovers well, and our players became selfish,” Coach Ujoh said.

In the battle for third place, Suleja Bulldogs triumphed over Gombe Bulls, securing the second runner-up position in a hard-fought match with a final score of 74-65. The intense competition and sportsmanship displayed captivated the audience, highlighting the spirit of basketball.

During the closing ceremony, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa (OFR) expressed his satisfaction with the level of competition. He emphasized the importance of fostering military-civilian collaboration through sports, promoting a non-kinetic approach to addressing insecurity.

As a testament to their commitment to youth development, General Musa announced the upcoming Youth Basketball Forum, scheduled for December 2024, further underscoring the championship’s impact beyond the court.

The inaugural Chief of Defence Staff Independence Day Basketball Championship not only celebrated sporting excellence but also showcased the power of unity, determination, and collaboration in overcoming challenges and achieving victory both on and off the court.
