Heavy Security Presence as Plateau Holds Local Government Elections

By Abigail Philip David

A heightened security presence has been reported in Jos, the Plateau State capital, and surrounding areas as the State Independent Electoral Commission (PLSIEC) conducts local government elections today.

Elections are underway in all 17 local government areas of the state to elect new chairmen and councillors. Our correspondent, monitoring the elections, observed Armoured Personnel Carriers from the police bomb squad and other security vehicles strategically positioned throughout Jos and its environs.

Stern-looking security operatives were seen at various locations, especially around the PLSIEC headquarters on John Samci Road. Heavily armed officers had blocked off streets leading to the commission’s office to ensure security.

Other major roads leading in and out of Jos were also sealed off by security personnel as early as 7 a.m. The move aims to prevent any unrest during the elections.

However, essential workers, including journalists, were subjected to thorough checks at security checkpoints before being allowed passage.

A security officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that their heavy presence was to ensure peace throughout the election. “We are here to enforce law and order. That is all I can say,” the officer stated.

Meanwhile, PLSIEC Chairman, Plangji Cishak, reassured the public of the commission’s commitment to a transparent election. “As we approach the October 9 elections, we reaffirm our dedication to conducting a free, fair, and credible process. We have followed our timelines, except for one postponement due to nationwide protests. Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s support has been vital, and I must emphasize that he has fully respected our operational independence,” Cishak said.

At the time of this report, voting had commenced across the local government areas under strict security supervision.
