Maj.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede has assumed command as Nigeria’s first Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) in a historic appointment. President Bola Tinubu appointed him on Wednesday while Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja recovers from medical leave abroad.

At the ceremony, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa noted that this appointment is unprecedented, stating, “This is something that has never happened in the history of the armed forces.” He emphasized that Oluyede has the full authority to lead the army during this unique transition.

In his remarks, Oluyede expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity and committed to fulfilling his responsibilities in line with the president’s directives and the strategic goals set by Lagbaja. He also called for unity and support from all to address the country’s security challenges and restore peace and prosperity.
