5 Things to Do Every Morning Before Checking Your Phone

By Abigail Philip David

Do you find yourself reaching for your phone first thing in the morning? If so, you’re not alone—about 80% of smartphone users check their phones within the first 15 minutes of waking up. This habit is fueled by dopamine, the “feel-good” chemical, which makes our phones highly addictive. However, there are compelling reasons to delay looking at your phone right after waking up.

Why You Shouldn’t Check Your Phone First Thing in the Morning
Science shows that in the morning, our brain is in a theta and alpha wave state, which promotes creativity, reflection, and calmness. Reaching for your phone immediately can disrupt these states, flooding your mind with potentially stressful thoughts, negative news, or work tasks. By waiting to check your phone, you set a calmer, more focused tone for your day.

Here are five simple practices to start your morning mindfully before looking at your phone:

1. Stretch or Exercise
Begin your day with gentle stretching or light exercise to improve flexibility, boost blood flow, and increase energy levels. Exercise clears the mind, releases endorphins, and sets a positive physical tone for the day.

2. Hydrate
Rehydrate your body with a glass of water after a night’s sleep to kickstart your metabolism. Drinking water in the morning has numerous health benefits, including improving digestion, skin health, and energy.

3. Meditate or Pray
Take a few minutes to meditate or pray. Focus on your breath and let go of any lingering thoughts to calm your mind, increase mindfulness, and start the day with a peaceful mindset.

4. Learn a Skill
Mornings are ideal for learning something new or practicing a skill, as your mind is fresh and focused. Use this time to develop a habit or gain knowledge while your brain is at its peak performance.

5. Plan Your Day
Visualize your day or jot down your to-do list. Having a clear plan reduces anxiety, keeps you organized, and helps you approach the day with a sense of purpose and control.

Starting your day without immediately checking your phone can improve your focus, mood, and productivity. Give yourself the gift of a few mindful minutes each morning, and notice how it transforms the rest of your day.
