7 Urgent Actions to Take During a Fire Outbreak

Fire outbreaks have become a growing concern in Ghana, causing severe damage to homes, markets, and institutions. Immediate action during a fire is crucial to prevent injury and reduce property loss. Here are seven urgent steps to take when a fire breaks out:

1. Raise the Alarm
As soon as you notice a fire, shout “Fire!” to alert others. Call the emergency services at 192 in Ghana, providing your exact location and details of the fire.

2. Use Fire Extinguishers if Safe
If the fire is small and manageable, use a fire extinguisher. Remember the PASS technique: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.

3. Evacuate Immediately if Unmanageable
Stay low to the ground to avoid smoke inhalation and use the nearest safe exit. Avoid elevators and cover your nose with a damp cloth.

4. Close Doors as You Leave
Close doors behind you to slow the fire’s spread and contain it in one area.

5. Help Vulnerable Individuals
Assist children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities in evacuating quickly and calmly.

6. Wait for Emergency Responders
Once outside, stay at a safe distance and wait for the fire service to declare the area safe before re-entering.

7. Know the Safety Protocols
Familiarize yourself with emergency exits and fire safety protocols at home, work, and other public places.

Preparedness and quick action can save lives during a fire outbreak. By following these steps, you ensure a safer environment for yourself and others.
