Midnight Attack Rocks A’Ibom Community, Property Worth Millions Destroyed

The Inua Eyet Ikot community in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State was plunged into turmoil following a midnight attack last weekend by suspected hoodlums from neighboring Esit Eket. The attack left property worth over ₦100 million destroyed, including homes, farms, schools, and clinics, forcing residents to flee.

The community, known for its oil and gas resources and as the host of ExxonMobil’s Qua Iboe Terminal and BUA Group’s petrochemical factory project, now stands largely deserted.

During a tour of the affected areas, the former village council chairman, Chief Nta Edyang, recounted the ordeal, describing the destruction as extensive.

“A few nights ago, our community was invaded at midnight. The attackers destroyed buildings, farms, and other facilities using sledgehammers and other tools. People fled for safety into the bushes,” he said.

Edyang linked the attack to disputes over land ownership tied to the ongoing petrochemical project. The attackers reportedly left behind a flag with the message: *‘Ibeno beware, we won’t tolerate your conspiracy with the state government to take our land.’*

The paramount ruler of Ibeno, Owong (Prof.) Effiong Archianga, traced the root of the conflict to the community’s vast natural resources. He warned against further aggression, stating, “Ibeno is blessed with oil and gas. We seek peace but will not hesitate to defend ourselves if the attacks persist. I call on the state government to step in and prevent further violence.”

Archanga also appealed for immediate government intervention to assist the affected residents and ensure security in the area.

Both the Ibeno and Esit Eket council chairpersons, Mrs. Glory Ekah Effiong and Mrs. Uduak Ikemesit Ikott, have been working closely with security agencies to restore peace. The Akwa Ibom State Government has reportedly visited the scene to assess the situation and initiate further investigations.

Obong Dennis Bassey Esenem, the village head of Mkpanak community in Ibeno, expressed hope for a resolution, praising the efforts of the council chairpersons to mediate the conflict and foster lasting peace.

While investigations continue, the displaced residents of Inua Eyet Ikot await relief and assurances of safety to rebuild their lives.
