Edo PDP and APC Trade Blame Over Secretariat Vandalism

By Abigail Philip David

The Edo State chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are embroiled in a heated dispute following allegations of vandalism at the PDP secretariat.

Chris Nehikhare, the Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, accused APC supporters of orchestrating the attack. He claimed that thugs invaded the PDP secretariat, destroying property worth millions of naira, including doors, windows, electronics, and office equipment. Nehikhare alleged that the attackers also looted computers and other valuables, leaving behind significant damage.

Condemning the incident, Nehikhare described it as a desperate attempt by the APC to intimidate the PDP and derail its efforts to challenge the outcome of the September 21 governorship election.

He stated, “It is disappointing and unfortunate that the APC mobilized thugs to attack our party secretariat in an effort to frustrate our mission to reclaim the mandate duly given to us by the people of Edo State. If the APC truly won the election fairly, why resort to violence?”

Nehikhare called on security agencies to investigate the attack and ensure that the perpetrators face justice. He also urged PDP members and supporters to remain calm and steadfast as the party pursued legal avenues to reclaim its mandate.

In response, APC Publicity Secretary Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie dismissed the allegations as baseless and accused the PDP of attempting to drag the APC into its internal issues.

He said, “How can the PDP claim that those who attacked its secretariat are APC thugs? Did they have APC uniforms or insignia? The accusation is unfounded and lacks evidence. The PDP should address its internal problems rather than involving the APC in its mess.”

Uwadiae-Igbinigie added that the APC government in Edo was focused on implementing projects that the PDP failed to execute during its time in power. He emphasized that the APC was committed to improving the lives of Edo residents and was celebrating its electoral victory.

The clash between the two parties highlights the ongoing political tension in the state, as the PDP continues to contest the results of the recent governorship election.
