INEC Relocates 715 Offices From LG Secretariats, Yakubu Reports

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has confirmed that 715 of its offices have been relocated outside local government secretariats across Nigeria. This move aims to enhance the neutrality of the electoral body, following a directive from the House of Representatives.

Yakubu’s remarks, made during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on November 21, 2024, highlighted that 92.4% of INEC’s offices have now been moved, with many situated in areas with ample space to construct independent office premises. This effort seeks to prevent undue interference in regions dominated by specific political parties, especially during election periods.

The relocation was prompted by concerns from opposition parties about the accessibility of INEC offices located within LG secretariats, particularly in relation to voter registration and the collation of election results.

Yakubu also pointed out the extensive network of INEC’s physical assets, including 774 local government offices, 37 state offices, and other crucial facilities. Despite challenges in some areas, such as limited land availability, the commission is committed to relocating the remaining offices to neutral locations.

Additionally, President Bola Tinubu recently forwarded three new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) nominees to the Senate for approval, continuing the push for electoral reform.
