Benefits of E-Learning System Outweigh Traditional Approaches — Prof. Ochefu

By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

Professor Yakubu Aboki Ochefu, former Vice Chancellor of Kwararafa University, Wukari, has urged Nigerian tertiary institutions to adopt e-learning systems to enhance the quality of education. Speaking at the 11th Public Lecture Series of the Federal University, Lokoja, on Wednesday, Prof. Ochefu emphasized that e-learning surpasses traditional approaches in delivering holistic and innovative education.

Key Advantages of E-Learning

In his lecture titled “Blended Learning Models: Combining Traditional and Digital Approaches for Holistic Education”, Prof. Ochefu highlighted several benefits of e-learning:

  • Enhanced Quality of Education: E-learning facilitates a transformative educational experience by integrating traditional methods with digital tools.
  • Optimized Resource Use: It makes efficient use of existing infrastructure, promoting cost-effectiveness.
  • Increased Engagement: The use of multimedia resources fosters student interest and participation, especially for introverted learners.
  • Improved Learning Outcomes: Multiple formats, such as video, text, and group discussions, enhance comprehension and practical application.
  • Professional Growth for Educators: It provides opportunities for lecturers to explore innovative teaching strategies and master educational technologies.
  • Flexibility and Inclusivity: The combination of online and face-to-face learning ensures flexibility while maintaining interaction and collaboration.

Challenges of E-Learning

Despite its numerous benefits, Prof. Ochefu identified several challenges, including:

  • High costs associated with implementing and maintaining e-learning systems.
  • Poor electricity supply and unreliable internet connectivity.
  • Limited ICT skills among students and lecturers.
  • Insufficient technological equipment.

Recommendations

Prof. Ochefu called for increased investment in digital infrastructure, capacity building for educators, and strategic policies to address these challenges. He noted that a blended learning approach, which integrates traditional and digital methods, provides a balanced solution to meet the needs of 21st-century education.

Institutional Perspective

In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, described the lecture as timely, stressing the importance of integrating technology into education.

“Blended learning bridges the gap between tradition and innovation, fostering critical thinking, inclusivity, and collaboration,” he said.

Prof. Akinwumi affirmed the university’s commitment to leveraging e-learning for delivering quality education, aligning with global standards in a rapidly evolving technological world.

This public lecture underscores the transformative potential of e-learning and its role in shaping the future of education in Nigeria.
