Renowned investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has been detained by the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division in Port Harcourt, sparking alarm over press freedom in the country. Soyombo, known for his fearless reporting on corruption and human rights abuses, has been in custody for three days.

His arrest follows his exposé implicating the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) in a smuggling ring, allegedly involving over 2,000 vehicles with rice. Soyombo’s investigation also accused soldiers from the 192 Battalion of providing cover for the illegal operation. Despite strong denials from the NCS, Soyombo released additional video evidence to support his claims.

The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), which Soyombo founded, has called for his immediate release, emphasizing that “journalism is not a crime.” Press freedom organizations are raising concerns about the chilling effect the detention may have on investigative journalism in Nigeria. The Nigerian Army has yet to comment on the matter.
