Ex-President Obasanjo Advocates Unity as Plateau Assembly PDP Lawmakers Mark Anniversary of Sack with Thanksgiving

By Israel Adamu, Jos

Former Nigerian President, General Olusegun Obasanjo (Rtd), has called on Christians to prioritize unity as a key driver of societal growth and development.

Speaking on Sunday at a thanksgiving service organized by 16 sacked Plateau State House of Assembly lawmakers, Obasanjo emphasized that no progress can be achieved without unity. He noted that peace, security, love, justice, and equity are essential pillars for sustainable development. The event was held at the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) Headquarters, Jos.

The thanksgiving marked one year since the Appeal Court nullified the elections of the lawmakers, alongside five House of Representatives members and two senators from Plateau State, all elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform. The rulings, which occurred between October and November 2023, were widely described by legal practitioners as a “miscarriage of justice.”

Obasanjo commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his leadership, rooted in equity and the fear of God. He also encouraged the lawmakers to remain resolute and focus on their future pursuits, stating, “Adversity is difficult, but it is meant to strengthen you.”

Governor Mutfwang, in his remarks, highlighted that true believers reveal their strength in times of adversity. “If you are not strong in Christ, the wind of adversity will blow you away,” he said.

Former Speaker Rt. Hon. Mathew Sule and Hon. Ishaku Maren, representing Bokkos Constituency, spoke on behalf of the former lawmakers. They explained that the thanksgiving was to fulfill the scriptural mandate to give thanks in all circumstances.

“Since our removal from office last year, between October and November 2023, the Lord has remained faithful to us. We see this as a divine arrangement,” they said.

They expressed gratitude to the Church for its prayers and to Governor Mutfwang for appointing them as liaison officers for their various constituencies after their removal.

The thanksgiving event reinforced calls for unity and resilience amid challenges faced by the sacked lawmakers.
