Founder of ‘The Alternative,’ Showunmi, Calls for Credible Opposition to Restore Faith in Democracy

By Isreal Adamu, Jos

Otunba Segun Showunmi, founder of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as The Alternative, has emphasized the urgent need for a credible opposition to balance governance and restore citizens’ trust in Nigeria’s democratic processes.

Speaking on Thursday at the North Central National Opposition Movement Town Hall Meeting in Jos, Showunmi addressed critical stakeholders and youths, underscoring the erosion of electoral integrity, lack of political ideology, and declining voter confidence in the nation.

The Need for Credible Leadership

Showunmi lamented that Nigeria deserves leaders who prioritize citizens’ interests, stating, “The nation’s democracy is under threat, and we must act to rescue it.” He further clarified that NOMC will not transform into a political party but will remain a civic platform aimed at engaging political actors, stakeholders, civil society, and democratic institutions.

The movement plans to focus on advocacy and voter education to combat vote trading, which Showunmi described as a “highest bidder heist” that undermines Nigeria’s democratic values. He also stressed the importance of reorienting citizens on the dangers of electing individuals with questionable wealth or integrity into leadership positions.

Critique of Nigeria’s Political Landscape

Showunmi criticized the judiciary’s declining integrity and the growing influence of violence and non-state actors in elections. Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, he said, “Our democracy has come a long way since 1999, but recent developments in our political landscape are deeply concerning.”

He highlighted the lack of progress in electoral credibility despite improved guidelines by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling for urgent reforms.

Contributions from Other Stakeholders

Adai Edwin Adai, Chairman of the North Central Zone of the movement, also spoke at the event, stressing the importance of strengthening democracy and promoting civic responsibility.

“There is a lack of transparency and accountability in government management processes,” Adai said. He criticized the Nigerian Parliament for being “passive and dogmatic” in holding the executive accountable for anti-people policies.

Adai further highlighted the declining economy, rising unemployment, business closures due to multiple taxation, and the high cost of living. “Corruption is rampant, and there is increasing inequality in resource generation and wealth distribution,” he stated.

The Path Forward

The town hall meeting aimed to reawaken citizens’ consciousness and encourage collective action to protect Nigeria’s democracy. “We must fight against vote buying and electoral malpractices during and after elections,” Adai emphasized.

The National Opposition Movement is committed to working closely with grassroots communities to enhance political education and establish a roadmap for credible opposition in Nigeria.

“This is not just about opposing the government,” Showunmi concluded. “It’s about building a system that holds leadership accountable and prioritizes the needs of the people.”
