The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has reiterated its dedication to reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector by 60% by 2031, as part of its broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
Announcing the initiative via its X platform, NNPC emphasized that the move aligns with Nigeria’s leadership role under the Global Methane Pledge, aimed at combating climate change.
During a meeting on Thursday with Robert Leahman, the U.S. State Department’s Global Methane Program Manager, and representatives from Deloitte, NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, outlined efforts to meet these ambitious targets.
“Reducing methane emissions is not just an environmental necessity but also a strategic imperative for Nigeria’s energy transition. We are leveraging partnerships to adopt global best practices and innovative solutions,” Kyari stated at the NNPC Towers in Abuja.
Collaborative Efforts for Methane Reduction
The discussions focused on methane abatement strategies, including a pilot project in the Niger Delta. This project aims to establish baseline emissions data, mitigate methane leaks, and promote sustainable practices across Nigeria’s energy sector.
Robert Leahman praised Nigeria’s proactive approach, highlighting its significance for Africa and beyond.
“Nigeria’s leadership under the Global Methane Pledge sets a standard for the continent. These initiatives will not only reduce emissions but also foster sustainable development in the energy sector,” he said.
The pilot project is a collaboration involving NNPC, Deloitte, and the U.S. Bureau of Energy Resources. It seeks to deploy data-driven techniques to identify and address methane hotspots, further aligning with Nigeria’s climate goals.
Advancing Climate and Economic Goals
Kyari emphasized the economic and environmental benefits of tackling methane emissions.
“This collaboration is a game-changer. By addressing methane leaks, we’re reducing waste, saving costs, and protecting the environment. It’s a win-win for our economy and the planet,” he stated.
The initiative reflects NNPC’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and underscores Nigeria’s role as a leader in global climate action.
