Edo 2024 Gov Poll Petition: Tribunal Holds Inaugural Pre-Hearing Session

By   Milcah   Tanimu

The 2024 Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will begin its inaugural and pre-hearing session today. This session will address petitions challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of APC’s Monday Okpebholo as the winner of the September 21 governorship election.

Seven Petitions Filed Before the Tribunal

The tribunal has received seven petitions as of this morning. One of these petitions comes from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo.

Ighodalo, who came second in the September 21 election results, is leading the legal challenge. Additionally, the Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata finished third in the same election.

Key Players in the Petition

  • Asue Ighodalo (PDP Candidate): Ighodalo is challenging the election outcome after securing second place in the results.
  • Tony Aziegbemi (Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee): Aziegbemi leads the political efforts supporting Ighodalo’s petition.

Today’s pre-hearing session will determine the next steps in the petition process. This will set the stage for how these claims will proceed and could influence the political future of Edo State.

What’s Next?

Political observers are closely monitoring today’s session to see how the tribunal will handle these petitions. The outcome could have significant implications for the leadership in Edo State.
