Foreign Insurgents Fueling Terror Attacks in Nigeria – DHQ

By   Milcah   Tanimu

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has identified foreign insurgents as key drivers behind the recent surge in terrorist attacks across Nigeria’s North East and North West regions. The revelation came during a military briefing held on January 16, 2025, by Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations.

Sahel Fighters Reinforcing Terrorists

According to Maj. Gen. Buba, the resurgence in attacks stems from foreign fighters entering Nigeria from the Sahel region. These insurgents are reportedly collaborating with local accomplices who act as informants, tracking military movements and aiding the terrorists.

He stated, “The influx of foreign fighters serves as reinforcements for terrorists. Combined with local collaborators, they are intensifying attacks on military bases and civilian populations.”

Military Commitment to Eradicating Terrorism

Despite these challenges, the military remains resolute in its mission to defeat terrorism. Maj. Gen. Buba emphasized a multi-pronged approach, including:

  • Targeting terrorist operatives and leadership.
  • Destroying logistical and operational capabilities.
  • Applying regional and international pressure.
  • Strengthening media engagement to counter misinformation.

He remarked, “Our strategic objective remains to break the terrorists’ will to fight. While setbacks occur, we are making significant progress.”

A Long-Term Fight for Security

Maj. Gen. Buba acknowledged that counterterrorism is a prolonged effort, stating, “This is not a quick fix but a long-term operation. We are determined to destroy the terrorists and ensure a safer Nigeria.”

He concluded by reiterating the need for collective responsibility, urging Nigerians to collaborate with the military, stating, “The military dey for you, dey for us.”
