SPSP to Study Zulum’s Efforts to Become a Global Model

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum was honored with the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) fellowship on Monday at the Government House in Maiduguri. The decoration was performed by the society’s president, Nathaniel Msen Awuapila, with Professor Isaac Oluwale Albert representing the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The event was also attended by notable government officials.

In his response, Governor Zulum expressed his appreciation for the recognition and reaffirmed his dedication to working alongside the SPSP to achieve lasting peace and development in the region. He highlighted the positive outcomes of the government’s non-kinetic measures, which have led to the surrender of over 200,000 repentant insurgents and their families.

“The non-kinetic strategies we adopted have yielded positive results,” said Governor Zulum, emphasizing the role of peace-building initiatives in restoring stability to Borno. He also noted his memberships in several prestigious professional bodies, including the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), among others.

The brief but impactful ceremony was attended by key figures, including Dr. Bukar Tijani, Secretary to the Borno State Government; Barrister Mallam Fannami, Head of Services; Dr. Babagana Malumbe, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Executive Governor; and various other senior officials.

SPSP to Study Zulum’s Model of Leadership

During a visit to the Governor in Maiduguri, President Nathaniel Msen Awuapila announced that the SPSP would commission a study on the significant positive impact of Governor Zulum’s leadership.

“Your Excellency, it is no exaggeration to say that around the Sahel, you are a model,” Mr. Awuapila remarked, praising the Governor’s efforts in post-conflict reconstruction, peacebuilding, and development. “We’ve observed the remarkable changes in Borno, and we intend to study how your contributions have impacted the people and how they can serve as a model for other regions in the Sahel and globally.”

Recognition of Governor Zulum’s Achievements

Professor Isaac Oluwale Albert also praised Governor Zulum’s work, particularly his numerous development projects across Borno State. “We are not here to honor you alone, but to honor ourselves by associating with the remarkable achievements you’ve made,” he said. He recounted visiting Borno, where they had seen many of the projects firsthand, a testament to the positive transformation under Zulum’s leadership.

As SPSP moves forward with its study, the society aims to explore how Governor Zulum’s approach can be replicated and serve as a valuable model for peace and development in conflict-prone areas globally.
