The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially approved the establishment of Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology, Oferekpe.
The approval was announced by NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, during a presentation of the recognition letter to Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State in Abuja on Thursday.
This development marks Ebonyi’s university as the 66th state university in Nigeria and the 278th institution within the Nigerian University System.
Resource Verification Before Operations Begin
Prof. Ribadu emphasized that while the university has been recognized, academic activities will only commence after a resource verification process. The NUC will assess the institution’s infrastructure, classrooms, library, and staffing to ensure readiness.
“We will visit when the university is ready to verify resources before giving the final approval to start operations,” Ribadu clarified.
Governor Nwifuru’s Vision for the University
Governor Nwifuru revealed that the university was conceived in 2021 to address the technical manpower gap and improve access to affordable tertiary education in Ebonyi State. He assured that the government is committed to providing the necessary funding and infrastructure for the university’s development.
“Strategic buildings, including the Senate building, staff quarters, hostels, and faculty structures, are at various stages of completion,” Nwifuru stated.
Progress in Development
The governor also highlighted that principal officers have been appointed to drive the university’s growth. With infrastructure and staffing underway, the institution is set to become a hub for education and technical skill development in the region.
The establishment of Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology is a significant step toward expanding educational opportunities in the state, boosting technical manpower, and fostering economic growth.
