FULL LIST: Private Universities Established by Nigerian Politicians

Must read

As of November 27, 2023, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Universities Commission, has approved a total of 147 private universities. These institutions coexist with universities owned by both the Federal and state governments.

The proliferation of private universities in the country has been attributed to persistent industrial actions, insufficient funding, and decay in public universities. The numbers have surged from just three in 1999 to 147 in 2023, with the National Universities Commission revealing that it has over 270 pending requests for the establishment of additional private universities.

An examination of the private universities, sourced from the NUC website on Tuesday, indicates that a majority of these institutions are established by religious organizations and individuals who are current or former politicians.
