Timileyin Ajayi Pleads Not Guilty in Salome Adaidu Murder Case

By Abigail Philip David

Timileyin Ajayi, accused of murdering National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Salome Adaidu, has pleaded not guilty in court. Adaidu’s death occurred a few weeks ago at Ajayi’s residence.

The Nasarawa State Police Command arrested Ajayi on January 12 and charged him with culpable homicide, a crime punishable by death. He was arraigned on Monday before Justice Simeon Aboki at Court 2 in Lafia.

Speaking after the court session, Stanley Nwaforagu, Officer-in-Charge of Legal at the Nasarawa State Police Command, stated that despite Ajayi’s plea, the police remain committed to ensuring justice is served.

Nwaforagu said, “Today, January 27, 2025, the defendant, Mr. Timileyin Ajayi, was formally arraigned on one count of culpable homicide punishable by death. He pleaded not guilty, and the court has scheduled trial dates for March 17 to 20. The court’s commitment to a speedy trial is commendable. We have strong evidence to support the charge, and we are confident justice will be served.”

Joseph Tukur, Ajayi’s defense counsel, expressed his commitment to ensuring his client receives a fair trial. He explained, “Today’s session was for arraignment, and my client has entered his plea. The next stage is the hearing.”

When asked about earlier statements attributed to his client, Tukur said, “It is not my role to prove the case but to ensure that the prosecution follows the law and proves their case beyond reasonable doubt. My job is to defend my client and uphold the law.”

The case has been adjourned for trial in March.
