5 Fruits That Can Cause Mouth Odour and How to Prevent It

By Milcah Tanimu

Bad breath might not always be due to poor oral hygiene; sometimes, it could be the fruits you eat. While fruits are generally healthy, certain types can contribute to bad breath due to their acidity, high sugar content, or natural compounds. Here are 5 fruits that may cause mouth odour:

  1. Citrus Fruits (Oranges, Lemons, Grapefruits)
Packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, citrus fruits are high in acidity. This acidity can create a breeding ground for bacteria in your mouth, potentially leading to bad breath. If you suffer from acid reflux, citrus fruits may also cause sour-smelling breath. To prevent this, rinse your mouth with water after eating them.
  2. Bananas
Though bananas are rich in nutrients, their high sugar content can fuel odour-causing bacteria in the mouth. As these bacteria break down sugars, they produce foul-smelling gases. The sticky texture of bananas can also cling to teeth, increasing bacterial growth if not cleaned properly.
  3. Pineapple
While delicious, pineapples are acidic and contain bromelain enzymes that break down proteins, creating an aftertaste that can contribute to bad breath. Pineapple’s sugar content encourages bacterial growth, so maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial.
  4. Durian
Known for its strong, pungent smell, durian contains sulfur compounds that can linger in your mouth even after brushing. These sulfuric compounds contribute to persistent bad breath. Drinking water and chewing sugar-free gum can help neutralize the smell.
  5. Mangoes
Mangoes are sweet and juicy but packed with natural sugars that can ferment in your mouth, providing a perfect environment for odour-causing bacteria. Their sticky texture also makes it easier for bacteria to thrive if teeth aren’t cleaned well.

How to Prevent Bad Breath:

  • Drink water: Rinse your mouth after eating acidic or sugary fruits to remove residue.
  • Brush and floss: Regular oral hygiene removes food particles that contribute to bad breath.
  • Chew sugar-free gum: This helps stimulate saliva production, which naturally cleanses the mouth.
  • Eat in moderation: Balance these fruits with foods that neutralize acidity and bacteria.
