Kano Governor Approves N6.8bn for Dansoshiya Dam and Irrigation Project

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the release of N6.8 billion for the construction of the Dansoshiya Dam and irrigation facilities in Kiru Local Government Area.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam, who said the project underscores the administration’s commitment to strengthening agriculture and achieving food security across the state.

According to Adam, while Kiru and the neighbouring Bebeji Local Government Areas will benefit directly, the project is expected to create ripple effects across all 44 local governments in Kano and potentially beyond.

“This project will boost commodity crop production and promote agricultural mechanisation, similar to the success recorded in Kura’s rice market and the Gafan agricultural hub,” he said.

The Dansoshiya Dam, upon completion, is expected to hold up to 3.1 billion litres of water. Around 1,000 hectares of land have been designated for irrigation, with the first phase covering 500 hectares. Between 1,000 and 3,000 farmers are projected to benefit directly in the initial phase.

Adam emphasized the broader impact of the initiative, noting that it will empower farmers, increase food production, create jobs, and contribute significantly to Kano State’s economy.

While the timeline for completion depends on the agreement with the construction company, he noted that the scale and technical nature of the work—particularly the need for precise engineering and intensive soil compaction—require careful and timely execution to ensure lasting results.

He added that the Dansoshiya Dam project is a flagship infrastructure effort by Governor Yusuf aimed at revitalising Kano’s agricultural sector and ensuring year-round irrigation for farmers.
